This trail has steep switchbacks which lead to a great view of Yale and the Fraser River. The caves are easy to miss since they are unmarked. Once you get beyond the part of the hike where you see the view down the west side of the hill, begin climbing over rocks and downhill slightly. You should find them after a couple of minutes of exploration. There are 5-6 caves in total. Look for large, dark gaps between the boulders.Statistics: Total Distance: 5.2 km (return) Estimated Time: 3 hours Level: Difficult Average Grade: 20.8% Structure: Linear – Return Elevation Gain: 540 m Start Elevation: 90 m Max Elevation: 630 mGPS Waypoints: Trailhead // N49.55714 W121.44478 10U 612476 5490555 Small bridge over creek // N49.55737 W121.44592 10U 612393 5490579 High voltage powerlines // N49.55777 W121.44640 10U 612358 5490623 Trail re-enters forest // N49.55880 W121.44621 10U 612369 5490738 Creek valley lookout // N49.56260 W121.44609 10U 612369 5491160 Trail crosses minor landslide // N49.56376 W121.44455 10U 612478 5491292 Summit / End of Trail // N49.57022 W121.44227 10U 612628 5492013 Main lookout // N49.56670 W121.44248 10U 612621 5491622 Spirit Caves // N49.56858 W121.44352 10U 612541 5491829 Fork in trail // N49.56904 E121.44240 51U 387379 5491882 Lower pond // N49.56900 W121.44161 10U 612678 5491878 Summit // N49.57020 W121.44238 10U 612620 5492011 Upper pond // N49.57096 W121.44208 10U 612640 5492096

Visit the rhododendrons at Rhododendron Flats, on a 10-minute loop walk through the forest. Lush carpets of moss keep the soil damp during the spring and early summer allowing the moisture loving rhododendron to be at its best when it flowers in June. (starting now!)Rhododendron comes from the Greek word meaning ‘rose tree’ and indeed, the Pacific rhododendron could compete with even the showiest of the hybrid roses. Reaching a sprawling height of up to 8m, it surpasses many of its cultivated cousins.Of the 600 different rhododendron species worldwide, only 27 varieties occur in North America.Because of its rarity, the Pacific Rhododendron is protected by law in BC.Via E.C. Nicolum River Provincial Park is located 8km east of Hope along Highway 3 (near the junction of Highways 3 & 5). This park has a small, fast flowing river and densely covered forest. It is a nice rest stop for travelers driving from the coast to the interior. There are many significant wildlife in the park. It is particularly known for its songbirds and fish. Some of the songbirds you will spot are varied thrush, black-throated grey warbler and red-breasted nuthatch. The river is ideal for catching Dolly Varden. The section of Highway 3 at Nicolum River Provincial Park was once a part of the historic HBC Trail.

The refurbished old aerial tram, which used to connect the the towns of Boston Bar and North Bend, sits prominently in Frances Harrington Park on Hwy 1. Storyboards that detail the history of the tram, North Bend, and Boston Bar are found around the perimeter of the park and were created by volunteers from photos and recollection of many of our towns’ elders. Pictures painted on the back of the story boards were done by Rick Campbell. Please stop and enjoy your lunch on the picnic tables that are provided in this lovely little spot, and learn something!

Skagit Valley Provincial Park is ideal for campers. There are three separate campgrounds in the park (Ross Lake, Silver Tip and Whitworth Horse Camp) with many recreational opportunities such as fishing, swimming, horseback riding, hunting, cycling and canoeing. The Skagit River has been tagged as one of the premier rivers for rainbow trout fishing in Western North America.
