Larch Hiking
Awaken your wanderlust and explore the larches of Manning Park, arguably our most iconic autumn experience. Nestled high in the rugged terrains of Frosty Mountain, these rare larches, or Larix lyallii, transform from their usual green to a stunning golden hue, creating a spectacle that rivals even the East Coast’s autumnal scenes. What makes these coniferous trees truly unique is their deciduous nature—unlike their evergreen counterparts, they shed their needles each fall, cloaking the landscape in a vibrant golden carpet. Embark on the challenging yet rewarding hike to Frosty Mountain in late September and early October to witness this miraculous transformation. The journey promises not only the allure of golden larches but also crisp alpine air and sweeping views of a wilderness that remains remarkably untamed.
(Given the transcendent beauty of the larches, it comes as no surprise that this spectacle draws admirers from far and wide, resulting in bustling trails. To experience the serene majesty of the larches with fewer crowds, we recommend visiting during off-hours. Early mornings or weekdays can offer a more peaceful and intimate connection. As always, please remember to tread lightly and leave no trace. This is a strenuous hike that takes an average of 8 hours to complete so please plan accordingly and only attempt if you have backcountry experience.)
Salmon Viewing
Just as the trees adorn themselves in a vibrant tapestry of colours, the waters of British Columbia’s waterways come to life with captivating shades of pink and red, signalling the return of the spawning salmon. Key locations such as the Coquihalla River, Sucker’s Creek, and especially Thacker Regional Park near Kawkawa Lake, emerge as prime spots to witness the awe-inspiring journey of these magnificent fish. Thacker Regional Park particularly vibrates with the activity of coho, pink, and chum salmon navigating the Kawkawa Creek trail. From mid to late September and into October, this natural spectacle unfolds, drawing visitors into the profound dance of life. Along the way, strategically placed signage guides spectators to the best spots for viewing, ensuring that everyone gets a front-row seat to this extraordinary display of nature’s salmon cycle.
